What’s on the Maine CDL Skills Test?

The Maine CDL skills test is made up of three sections:

• Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

This portion of the exam tests your ability to assess whether your vehicle is safe to operate. You’ll be required to name and explain various components and describe how you would inspect them for defects.

What to Expect

You'll inspect critical parts of the vehicle, such as:

• Engine compartment and fluid levels

• Brake systems and components

• Suspension and steering systems

• Tires, wheels, and rims

• Lights, reflectors, and safety equipment

• Coupling devices (if applicable)

If your vehicle is equipped with air brakes, you’ll need to perform a complete air brake system check, which includes:

• Static pressure test

• Applied pressure test

• Low air warning

• Emergency brake test

Maine-Specific Requirements

Maine uses a pass/fail system for the pre-trip.
