Earning your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Maine is a critical step toward launching a career in trucking or commercial driving. The final requirement is the Maine CDL skills test, a three-part exam administered by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and authorized third-party examiners. This test evaluates your ability to inspect, maneuver, and safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) under real-world conditions and Maine-specific regulations.
At CDL eXpert, we help drivers prepare with the CDL Skills Exam course, created and taught by veteran CDL examiner Al Hanley. This course walks you through exactly what examiners look for—so you can pass your test the first time.

This guide outlines the structure of the Maine CDL skills test, what to expect, and how our course helps you prepare effectively and confidently.
What’s on the Maine CDL Skills Test?
The Maine CDL skills test is made up of three sections:
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Basic Vehicle Control (Backing Maneuvers)
On-Road Driving
Each section must be passed individually to obtain your CDL.
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
This portion of the exam tests your ability to assess whether your vehicle is safe to operate. You’ll be required to name and explain various components and describe how you would inspect them for defects.
What to Expect
You'll inspect critical parts of the vehicle, such as:
Engine compartment and fluid levels
Brake systems and components
Suspension and steering systems
Tires, wheels, and rims
Lights, reflectors, and safety equipment
Coupling devices (if applicable)
If your vehicle is equipped with air brakes, you’ll need to perform a complete air brake system check, which includes:
Static pressure test
Applied pressure test
Low air warning
Emergency brake test
You’ll need to use correct technical language like:
“Properly mounted and secure”
“Not cracked, bent, or broken”
“No leaks and in safe working condition”
Maine-Specific Requirements
Maine uses a pass/fail system for the pre-trip. Failing to correctly identify or explain required components can result in immediate disqualification. You must complete the inspection without notes or assistance once the test begins. The Maine CDL Manual outlines the full checklist that examiners will use during this section. If you're testing in a vehicle with air brakes, the air brake test is mandatory and must be performed correctly to earn the endorsement.
Basic Vehicle Control (Backing Maneuvers)
This portion of the exam evaluates your control over the vehicle in a limited space. You'll be required to perform specific backing maneuvers that demonstrate precision and awareness.
What to Expect
Maine CDL examiners typically require three of the following maneuvers:
Straight-Line Backing
Offset Backing (Left or Right)
Alley Dock
Parallel Parking (Driver-Side or Conventional)
You’ll be graded on your ability to stay within the designated boundaries, avoid cone strikes, and minimize excessive corrections.
Maine-Specific Requirements
Parallel parking is required for most CDL applicants in Maine. There is a limit on the number of allowed pull-ups and stop-and-looks—going over that limit may result in point deductions or failure. Hitting cones or crossing boundaries may lead to an immediate fail. Test layouts follow AAMVA standards, but spacing may vary slightly between locations, so be ready for any layout.
On-Road Driving
This final section evaluates your ability to safely operate a CMV in live traffic conditions. You’ll be observed by an examiner while driving on various types of public roads.
What to Expect
You’ll be tested on your ability to:
Maintain lane control and proper speed
Use mirrors and check blind spots
Shift gears smoothly (if using manual transmission)
Navigate turns, intersections, and merges
Respond to traffic signals, signs, and road markings
Handle school zones, work zones, and railroad crossings
Maine-Specific Requirements
You must come to a complete stop at all railroad crossings, even when no train is present—this is a strict requirement in Maine. Speeding, missed signals, or unsafe lane changes will result in immediate failure. Test routes may include rural roads, city streets, and hills, reflecting Maine’s diverse terrain and traffic patterns. Examiners are especially focused on mirror checks, signal usage, and proper gear control throughout the test.
