If you're ready to start your journey toward a high-paying job in commercial trucking, it all begins with getting your CLP – the Commercial Learner’s Permit. This article breaks down what a CLP is, why you need it, and how to get one step-by-step. Whether you're making a career change or just starting out, this guide is for you.
What Is a CLP?
A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) is your first official step toward getting a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It’s like a learner’s permit for driving large commercial vehicles.
With a CLP, you're legally allowed to practice driving a commercial vehicle on public roads—but only with a qualified CDL holder in the passenger seat.
Think of it as your entry ticket into the trucking industry.
Why You Need a CLP
You can’t get your CDL without it. Every driver must hold a valid CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test. It also gives you the hands-on experience needed to pass your driving exam.
Plus, holding a CLP lets employers know you're serious about your training and ready to move forward.
Steps to Get Your CLP
1. Meet the Basic Requirements
You must:
Be at least 18 years old to drive within your state (21+ to drive across state lines).
Have a valid driver’s license.
Provide proof of identity, residency, and your Social Security Number.
Pass a DOT medical exam and receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Tip: If you’re under 21, you’ll be limited to intrastate driving until your 21st birthday.
As of 2022, the FMCSA requires all new commercial drivers to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before taking the knowledge test. CDL Expert’s online training makes this part easy. You'll learn everything you need and earn your ELDT Theory Certificate.
With CDL Expert:
Learn from your phone or computer
Study at your pace, anytime
Get instant certification when you pass
3. Study for the Knowledge Test
To get your CLP, you must pass written tests based on:
General Knowledge
Air Brakes (if applicable)
Combination Vehicles (for Class A)
Any additional endorsements (like passenger or tanker)
CDL Expert includes practice test questions with explanations to help you learn and retain the info.
4. Apply at Your Local DMV
Once you’ve completed ELDT training and studied, head to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and:
Submit your ELDT certificate
Bring your ID documents and medical card
Pay the CLP fee (varies by state)
Take the written tests
If you pass, you'll walk out with your CLP in hand!
5. Start Behind-the-Wheel Training
After getting your CLP, the real fun begins. You’ll train on real trucks under the supervision of a licensed CDL driver, preparing for the final skills test.
And yes, you need to hold your CLP for at least 14 days before taking the test for your full CDL.
What Happens After You Get a CLP?
Once you’ve practiced enough and feel confident behind the wheel, you can schedule your CDL skills test at your state DMV. Pass that, and you’re officially a licensed commercial driver—ready for the road and real job opportunities.
