How Do I Get My CDL In Colorado?

What is a Commercial Driver's License?

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a requirement for individuals who want to operate large or heavy vehicles for commercial purposes. This includes a combination of vehicles such as trucks with trailers, buses, and other commercial vehicles. The CDL is necessary to ensure that drivers are qualified to handle the complexities and responsibilities associated with these larger vehicles. You can find more specific information about the differences between a regular driver's license and a CDL here.

When does a driver need a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate a vehicle in Colorado legally?

In Colorado, you must have a valid CDL to operate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. Additionally, a CDL is required for drivers of vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or to transport hazardous materials. The transportation of passengers requires a Passenger Endorsement. Transporting Hazardous materials requires a Hazmat Endorsement. Enroll in our online class here and earn your Hazmat ELDT Theory Certificate.

Do all vehicles having a GVWR or a GCWR over 26,000 lbs require a CDL?

No, not all vehicles with a GVWR or GCWR over 26,000 pounds require a CDL. Some exceptions include certain farm, military, and emergency response vehicles. It's important to check specific exemptions to understand what vehicles fall into this category.

What do I Need to Obtain a CDL?

Age

To obtain a Colorado CDL you must be at least 18 years old to drive within the state (intrastate) and at least 21 years old to drive across state lines (interstate) or transport hazardous materials.

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before applying for a CDL, you must obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). The best way to do this is to study the CDL Manual. You can download a free PDF here. This involves passing the general knowledge test covering the rules and regulations for commercial driving. Once you have your CLP if this is your first time applying for a CDL you will need to take and pass ELDT (Entry Level Driver Training program) from an approved provider you can find one here. The CDL eXpert is a registered provider and you can register for our online ELDT Theory class here.

Road Test

You must hold a CLP for a minimum of 14 days. You should practice driving and take the CDL skills test in the same type of vehicle you are going to drive. This practice includes a pre-trip inspection, a basic vehicle control test, and an on-road driving test. Some people go to truck driving school we have a blog on how much it should cost here. If you choose to attend a truck driving school you would take your skills test completion form to the DMV with you after you pass. Successfully passing these tests demonstrates your ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

CDL Initial Application Information

When applying for a CDL, you must provide proof of identity, residency, and Social Security number. You must also pass a vision test and provide a Medical Examiner's Certificate, which you get by passing a DOT Physical Exam.

Why do I need a DOT Physical Exam to apply for/maintain my CDL?

A DOT Physical Exam ensures you are medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle. This exam evaluates your overall health, including vision, hearing, and physical capabilities, to ensure you can safely perform the tasks required of a commercial driver. You can find a list of registered providers here. After passing the DOT Physical you will receive a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate, sometimes called a DOT Medical Card.

Do I need to provide a copy of my DOT Physical Exam to the State of Colorado every time I have a DOT Physical Exam?

Yes, you must provide a copy of your DOT Physical Exam to the State of Colorado every time you renew it. This is called self-certification and can be done here. This ensures the state has up-to-date information on your medical fitness to operate a commercial vehicle.

Classes of Commercial Licenses

All states including Colorado offer three classes of CDLs: Class A, Class B, and Class C.

Class A

This license is for drivers operating commercial motor vehicles with a combined GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is 10,001 pounds. Class A licenses are typically required for tractor-trailers.

Class B

This license applies to drivers operating a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not exceeding 10,000 pounds GVWR. Class B licenses are often required for operating large buses, straight trucks, or box trucks.

Class C CDL

This license is for drivers operating commercial motor vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or to transport hazardous materials. The GVWR of these vehicles is less critical than the specific use and does not fit a Class A or Class B Commercial Motor Vehicle category.

Which vehicles are exempt from requiring a CDL?

Certain vehicles are exempt from CDL requirements in Colorado. These include:

  • Military Vehicles: Operated by military personnel in pursuit of military duties.

  • Emergency Vehicles: Used by firefighters and other emergency personnel.

  • Recreational Vehicles: Used for personal use, such as RVs.
