What to Expect on the Nevada CDL Skills Test: A State-Specific Guide

Writer: Emily ParkerEmily Parker

Earning your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Nevada is a crucial step toward a career in trucking. The final challenge in this process is passing the Nevada CDL skills test, a three-part exam administered by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or an approved third-party tester. This test evaluates your ability to inspect, maneuver, and safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV).

At CDL eXpert, we specialize in preparing drivers for the knowledge and skills tests required to obtain a CDL. While we don’t offer behind-the-wheel training, our FMCSA-compliant Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) program provides the essential knowledge you need to approach the Nevada CDL skills test with confidence.

This guide explains the structure of the Nevada CDL skills test, state-specific testing requirements, and how CDL eXpert can help you prepare.

What’s on the Nevada CDL Skills Test?

The Nevada CDL skills test consists of three parts:

  • Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

  • Basic Vehicle Control (Backing Maneuvers)

  • On-Road Driving

Each section is designed to assess different aspects of your ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely and efficiently.

Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

The Pre-Trip Inspection tests your ability to evaluate your vehicle’s condition before driving. You must inspect key components, explain their function, and identify potential safety issues.

What to Expect:

  • You will inspect critical vehicle components, including the engine compartment, brakes, tires, lights, steering system, and trailer coupling devices (if applicable).

  • If your vehicle has air brakes, you must perform a full air brake system check, including the air brake leakage test and emergency brake test.

  • You must verbally explain each part of the inspection using proper terminology, such as “properly mounted,” “secure,” and “no leaks.”

Nevada-Specific Requirements:

  • Nevada examiners pay special attention to air brake tests. Missing a critical air brake check can result in automatic failure if you are applying for a CDL with an air brake endorsement.

  • Certain inspection items may vary depending on the testing location and examiner. It’s important to follow the full pre-trip checklist provided by the Nevada DMV.

Basic Vehicle Control (Backing Maneuvers)

This portion of the test evaluates your ability to control the vehicle in a confined space. You must complete a series of backing and parking maneuvers while staying within boundaries and avoiding obstacles.

What to Expect:

Nevada CDL examiners typically test the following maneuvers:

  • Straight-Line Backing – Reversing the vehicle in a straight path between two sets of cones.

  • Offset Backing (Left or Right) – Backing into a space offset from your starting position.

  • Parallel Parking (Driver-Side or Conventional) – Parking the vehicle within a marked boundary.

  • Alley Docking – Backing the vehicle into a simulated dock or parking space at a 90-degree angle.

Nevada-Specific Requirements:

  • Nevada requires CDL applicants to perform parallel parking, which is not required in all states. You should practice this skill before your test.

  • Examiners will deduct points for pull-ups, so setting up your vehicle correctly before backing is essential.

On-Road Driving

The final portion of the test evaluates your ability to operate a CMV safely in real traffic conditions. The examiner will assess your performance on city streets, highways, and possibly mountain roads, depending on the testing site.

What to Expect:

During the on-road driving test, you will be assessed on:

  • Lane positioning and speed control

  • Proper use of mirrors and signals

  • Turning, intersections, and right-of-way rules

  • Shifting gears (for manual transmissions)

  • Merging onto highways and handling traffic

  • Navigating railroad crossings, school zones, and work zones

Nevada-Specific Requirements:

  • The road test route varies by location but typically includes urban streets, highways, and a section with elevation changes.

  • Nevada has strict traffic laws for work zones. Speeding or unsafe driving in a work zone can result in automatic failure.

  • Some Nevada testing routes may include mountain or high-wind areas, requiring drivers to demonstrate safe handling techniques.

Nevada CDL Testing Locations

The Nevada CDL skills test is available at select DMV locations and third-party testing sites. As of the latest update, CDL testing is conducted at the following Nevada DMV offices:

  • Las Vegas – Commercial Licensing Office

  • Reno DMV Office

  • Elko DMV Office

Third-party testing providers are also available in other areas, including Sparks, North Las Vegas, and rural locations. It is recommended to schedule your test in advance, as wait times may vary.
