Earning your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Iowa is a major step toward starting your career in commercial driving. The final step is the Iowa CDL skills test, a three-part exam administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) at designated CDL testing sites and third-party locations across the state. This exam evaluates your ability to inspect, maneuver, and safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) under real-world conditions.
To help you prepare, CDL eXpert offers the CDL Skills Exam course—led by veteran examiner Al Hanley. It breaks down each section of the test so you know what to expect, what examiners are looking for, and how to pass confidently on your first try.

This guide outlines the structure of the Iowa CDL skills test, state-specific testing rules, and how our course helps you get exam-ready.
What’s on the Iowa CDL Skills Test?
The Iowa CDL skills test includes three required sections:
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Basic Vehicle Control (Backing Maneuvers)
On-Road Driving
Each section must be passed in order. If you fail one part, you’ll need to reschedule and retake only that part (unless otherwise directed by your examiner).
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
The pre-trip inspection tests your ability to evaluate the safety and readiness of your vehicle. You’ll be asked to point out and explain the function and condition of key components.
What to Expect
During this part of the test, you’ll inspect major systems including:
Engine and fluid levels
Brakes and air systems
Suspension and steering components
Tires, wheels, and rims
Lights and reflectors
Coupling system and trailer parts (if applicable)
If you’re testing in a vehicle with air brakes, you’ll be required to complete a full air brake system check—including the leak test, low air warning, and emergency spring brake activation.
You must use correct language when describing items, such as:
“Properly mounted and secure”
“No leaks, cracks, or damage”
“Working and clean”
Iowa-Specific Requirements
Iowa uses a pass/fail system for the pre-trip. Missing any critical safety components will result in failure of this section.
The Iowa CDL manual outlines which parts are required for your class and vehicle type.
Air brake checks are mandatory for any vehicle with air brakes, and examiners will not provide coaching or reminders.
You must demonstrate your knowledge without assistance, and in the proper sequence.
Basic Vehicle Control (Backing Maneuvers)
This section assesses how well you control the vehicle at low speeds in a confined space. You'll be scored on accuracy, control, and use of mirrors.
What to Expect
Iowa CDL skills tests typically include three out of the following four maneuvers:
Straight-Line Backing
Offset Backing (Left or Right)
Parallel Parking (Driver-Side or Conventional)
Alley Dock
You’ll need to stay within marked boundaries, minimize pull-ups, and avoid hitting cones or crossing lines.
Iowa-Specific Requirements
Parallel parking is required in Iowa as part of the standard test battery.
Examiners allow a limited number of pull-ups and corrections, but too many will result in point deductions.
Cone strikes or exiting the marked boundaries are considered major errors and may lead to failure.
The order and selection of maneuvers can vary depending on the test location—be prepared for all possibilities.
On-Road Driving
This final portion of the exam evaluates your ability to safely operate a CMV in real traffic. The examiner will guide you through a route that may include city streets, highways, and light rural traffic.
What to Expect
Your examiner will score you on:
Lane positioning and lane changes
Shifting and use of gears (manual only)
Proper use of signals and mirrors
Compliance with traffic signs and signals
Turning, merging, and maintaining control
Behavior in school zones, construction zones, and at railroad crossings
Iowa-Specific Requirements
Railroad crossings require a full stop and proper visual check—this is strictly enforced in Iowa.
Any speeding, unsafe lane changes, or failure to yield will result in automatic failure.
You may be asked to demonstrate hill parking, right turns at tight intersections, or driving through construction areas.
Iowa examiners expect consistent mirror checks and smooth handling of the vehicle throughout the test.
